Japan is currently experiencing a significant surge in influenza cases nationwide. In the week ending December 15, 2024, approximately 94,259 flu patients were reported across 5,000 hospitals and clinics, bringing the estimated total to 718,000 cases for the season.
By December 27, 2024, the situation had intensified, with an estimated 1.67 million people contracting the flu, doubling the number from the previous week. All 47 prefectures reported increases, with the average number of cases per clinic rising to 42.66.
Health authorities are urging the public to exercise heightened caution, especially during the New Year holiday season, which typically involves increased travel and gatherings. Preventive measures such as regular hand washing, mask-wearing, and avoiding crowded places are strongly recommended to curb the spread of the virus.
In addition to human influenza cases, Japan has also reported outbreaks of avian influenza. Notably, a significant outbreak was confirmed at a poultry farm in Ibaraki Prefecture on December 29, 2024, leading to the culling of affected birds to prevent further spread.
The Japanese health ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and advises the public to stay informed and adhere to recommended health guidelines to mitigate the impact of the influenza outbreaks.
